Trump Uses Anti-Transgender Slur Against Democratic Opponent in Competitive South Carolina Senate Race

President Donald Trump endorsed Republican Sen. Darline Graham in South Carolina’s Senate race and repeatedly used an anti-transgender slur to attack her Democratic opponent, pediatrician Annie Andrews, who is not transgender. He also accused Andrews of supporting open borders, defunding the police and restricting gun rights. Andrews emphasized her work as a mother and doctor and her focus on lowering costs and improving life for families. Former Republican Gov. David Beasley condemned Trump’s post as “abhorrent,” and other Democratic leaders and LGBTQ+ advocates also criticized it. Graham was appointed to her late brother Lindsey Graham’s seat, and the race has drawn unusual national attention as a more competitive contest than expected.
A RealClearPolitics polling average cited in the New York Post article had Graham leading Andrews by just 2.4 percentage points; Andrews was seeking to become the first Democrat elected to the Senate from South Carolina since 1998.
The White House, asked why Trump used the slur, referred reporters back to his Truth Social post, according to Newser.
The AOL article reports that Trump’s MAGA Inc. PAC spent more than $800,000 helping Graham win the Republican primary runoff, and that the Cook Political Report recently shifted the general-election race from solidly Republican to likely Republican.
The AOL article says Andrews has opposed gender-identity surgery for minors, despite South Carolina Republicans criticizing her past support for hormone treatment for children.
