Global Pharmaceutical Federation Urges Governments to Expand Pharmacist Healthcare Roles

World Pharmacists Day 2026, themed “Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures,” prompted calls to expand pharmacists’ responsibilities and strengthen their place in healthcare systems. The International Pharmaceutical Federation urged governments to let pharmacists work to the full scope of their practice, while community pharmacists highlighted their accessibility, trusted patient relationships and growing services, including vaccination. Events in India emphasized pharmacists’ role in combating antimicrobial resistance through responsible antibiotic use and patient education, alongside calls for innovation and interdisciplinary skills. Pharmacy educators in Bangladesh called for updated curricula, stronger links between universities, industry and regulators, clearer professional responsibilities, and more effective registration and drug oversight. Celebrations at universities also used competitions and seminars to engage students in pharmacy research, patient care and public health challenges.
At GITAM School of Pharmacy’s event in Visakhapatnam, a session highlighted the growing burden of chronic kidney disease, with particular focus on Uddanam nephropathy.
A keynote at the same event urged pharmacy students to consider fields including artificial intelligence, intellectual property, entrepreneurship and global healthcare delivery as part of pharmacy’s expanding future.
At BRAC University, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Arshad Mahmud Chowdhury pointed to research using nanorobots to deliver medicine directly to human cells as an example of advances that pharmacy curricula should keep pace with.
Rayat Bahra University’s five-day celebrations included a SciToons competition in which students used cartoons and narratives to warn about self-medication and antibiotic overuse.
