US and G20 Nations Reach Accord on Light-Touch AI Regulation Framework

US representatives from the Group of 20 nations have unanimously agreed to adopt guidelines for AI regulation, which call for a lighter approach towards governing artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. The framework was endorsed by all G20 nations at a tech and innovation summit hosted by the Trump administration in North Carolina. The guidelines, which are non-binding, call for sector-specific approaches to rule-making and avoid creating new regulatory bodies for AI governance. They also call for closer collaboration between governments and private industry in vetting nascent technologies. These principles will be presented for formal adoption by G20 leaders at their upcoming summit in Doral, Florida. The agreement comes ahead of a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump, which is expected to focus on AI.
