Stricter Food Labelling

India food regulator considers stricter labelling measures following Supreme Court scrutiny.

India's food regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has informed the Supreme Court that it is open to stricter food labelling measures, following criticism that it was delaying implementing warning labels by proposing a two-phased approach. The FSSAI proposed initial red-coloured hexagonal warning labels for products that exceed limits in at least two categories, added sugar, salt or saturated fat, with plans to make the labels stricter in a second phase. Activists had argued that the FSSAi's approach was too lenient. The regulator responded by saying it is now open to implementing stricter labels.
