Mahindra Expands SUV Lineup With New Hybrid and Range-Extender Powertrains

Mahindra is pivoting away from an electric-only strategy, planning a lineup of hybrid and range-extender SUVs to compete in India's surging market for efficient vehicles. The company is testing the compact Vision S under four meters long on its flexible NU_IQ platform, which can support petrol, hybrid, and electric powertrains. Autocar India reports that Mahindra is also exploring a range-extender version of the XEV 9S, where a petrol engine acts only as a generator while electric motors drive the wheels. Meanwhile, the upcoming XUV 7XO could get a series-parallel strong-hybrid system capable of exceeding 1,000 kilometers on a single tank.
The shift reflects slower-than-expected EV adoption in India, where battery-electric vehicles made up just 9% of Mahindra's sales last year—far below the company's earlier target of 20 to 30% by 2028. Tightening emission rules and competition from Toyota's strong hybrids have forced Mahindra to hedge its bet on pure EVs while meeting environmental standards.

The XUV 7XO SUV is being developed with a series-parallel strong-hybrid system that uses electric power in slow urban driving and switches to petrol engine drive at higher speeds. Autocar India states the system harnesses regenerative braking to replenish the battery during deceleration. Mahindra is targeting a claimed combined range exceeding 1,000 kilometers on a single fuel tank. This approach directly challenges Toyota's market-leading strong hybrids, which have gained traction among Indian buyers seeking efficiency without needing to install home chargers.
India's CAFE Phase 3 emission standards, effective April 2027, require automakers to lower fleet carbon emissions significantly. A portfolio mixing pure EVs, strong hybrids, and range-extenders allows Mahindra to shield its core combustion lineup—the Scorpio and Thar—while remaining compliant. Mahindra initially committed over $1 billion to its INGLO born-electric architecture but slowed EV adoption projections after battery-electric vehicles captured only 9% of the company's sales volume last year, far short of its 20 to 30% target for 2028.
