New Open-Source Tool Disables Apple Intelligence and Frees Up Mac Storage

Beyond the features listed in the summary, RemoveMacAI also removes models for Photos Clean Up, Spatial Photos and Xcode code completion; disabling Apple Intelligence also affects smart replies and inline predictions.
Apple says Full Disk Access can expose files, mail, messages and browsing history, and can also compromise the privacy of people communicating with the user. It says it will add steps to make granting that access a more intentional decision, while still allowing users to enable it.
The planned Full Disk Access changes have drawn concern from developers who say added barriers could hinder apps distributed outside the App Store, though some endpoint-security vendors understand Apple’s concerns. Objective-See co-founder Patrick Wardle pointed to “poorly written/insecure/greedy AI agents/assistants” seeking Full Disk Access.
The Full Disk Access changes may be related to allegations that Meta’s Muse AI agent read a journalist’s private messages without permission, although Meta denies the claim and Apple’s motivation is not confirmed.
A new open-source tool called RemoveMacAI lets Mac users permanently disable Apple Intelligence and free up 10GB or more of storage space. India Today reported the tool works on Apple silicon Macs running macOS 27, removing AI models and preventing them from reinstalling automatically. Some users say Apple Intelligence consumes over 30GB of their drive.
The tool disables AI-enhanced Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, and photo summaries — but regular Dictation still works. Web Pro News notes the command-line utility can reclaim up to 35GB in extreme cases, depending on how many AI models users have installed.
RemoveMacAI uses Apple's own restriction keys to disable features cleanly. 9to5Mac explains the tool requires users to approve a configuration profile in System Settings — no hacking or disabling security needed. The developer says changes persist even after macOS updates. A dry-run mode lets users preview what will be removed before committing.
The tool also removes models for Photos Clean Up, Spatial Photos, and Xcode code completion. Smart replies and inline text predictions get disabled alongside the main Apple Intelligence features. Users can revert the changes if they change their mind later.
Separately, Apple is planning stricter rules before allowing apps full access to your files, messages, and emails. India Today reported Apple worries AI agents could read private communications without permission. The company will add extra confirmation steps to make granting this access a deliberate choice, not an accidental click-through.
The move follows concerns about 'poorly written, insecure, greedy AI agents' seeking Full Disk Access, according to security researcher Patrick Wardle. Some developers worry Apple's barriers will block legitimate apps sold outside the App Store. But endpoint-security vendors understand Apple's privacy concerns.
The Full Disk Access changes may stem from allegations that Meta's Muse AI agent secretly read a journalist's private messages. Meta denies the claim, and Apple has not confirmed this triggered the policy shift. Still, the timing suggests Big Tech is finally reckoning with AI privacy risks.
