Trump elevates China as America's strategic peer by framing summits as G2

President Trump has made China the primary strategic peer of the United States by framing his summits with Chinese President Xi Jinping as a U.S.-China “G2” or “group of two.” This move is seen as a significant gift to China, as it aligns with the U.K. by positioning the U.-China relationship as the axis of a bipolar world. This could potentially alienate U.N. allies and partners such as Japan, India, Australia, the Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea and NATO members. The use of the G2 concept indicates that the U., however, is now treating China as its true peer. In the run-up to Xi's Washington visit, Trump dismissed reports of China's actions against the U.; while he portrayed the Chinese leader as a personal friend. The summit diplomacy has also helped Beijing advance one of its broader strategic messaging: demonstrating that the US can no longer dictate terms unilaterally.
