Oregon closes statewide razor clam harvesting after tests detect dangerous domoic acid levels.

Oregon has closed razor clam harvesting statewide, including at Clatsop Beach, after tests found domoic acid above the safety threshold. Mussel harvesting has reopened coastwide after southern-coast tests fell below the alert level; bay clams and crabs are also listed as open. Officials advise checking the state’s shellfish updates or calling the Shellfish Safety Hotline before harvesting, as toxin closures require two consecutive clean tests before an area can reopen.
The statewide razor-clam closure came just after Clatsop Beach reopened from its annual conservation closure, which runs from July through October 1.
Oregon conducts shellfish-toxin testing at least twice a month, as tides and weather allow.
Past toxin events have caused prolonged disruptions: a harmful algal bloom led to a year-long north-coast razor-clam shutdown in 2020–21, and in 2024, 20 people became severely ill after eating mussels containing paralytic shellfish poison (PSP).
