LA Mayoral Candidates Karen Bass and Nithya Raman Clash Over Gaza at Forum

Los Angeles mayoral candidates Karen Bass and Nithya Raman offered sharply different views on the war in Gaza at a forum with Jewish Angelenos, where they also faced questions about antisemitism, public safety, homelessness and other city issues. Raman defended using the term “genocide,” saying she had consulted experts and felt compelled to speak out about civilian deaths and attacks on hospitals. Bass rejected the term, saying her focus as mayor is how international conflicts affect Los Angeles and keeping Angelenos safe amid divisions. The candidates also presented contrasting priorities on local concerns as the mayoral race entered its final weeks.
The forum took place five weeks before Election Day, when new polling showed Raman with a double-digit lead over Bass, although nearly one-third of voters were still undecided.
Raman faced questions about her appearance on Hasan Piker’s podcast and her support from the Democratic Socialists of America; she said she had spoken against antisemitism and described “genocide” as “a deeply painful word.”
Raman said she was the first person at City Hall to condemn Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
On policing, Bass said Los Angeles’ current police staffing level is insufficient.
