India Coach Gautam Gambhir Says Teen Star Must Wait For T20I Spot

Sooryavanshi set two age-related records earlier in the year: he became the youngest Indian to make an international debut, at 15 years and 99 days, and the youngest player to score a half-century in men’s international cricket, doing so at 15 years and 118 days.
In the Asian Games gold-medal match against Pakistan, Sooryavanshi scored a quick 15 and hit two sixes; Abhishek Sharma made 61 off 28 balls, while Sanju Samson scored 2.
India’s next assignment mentioned in the coverage was a five-match home T20I series against the West Indies, scheduled for October 6–17.
India coach Gautam Gambhir said 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi must wait for a regular spot in the T20I team, despite the young batter's impressive recent form. Deccan Chronicle reported that Gambhir explained the selection depends on what the coach and captain believe gives India the best chance to win, not outside pressure or one strong performance.
Sooryavanshi set two age records earlier this year — becoming the youngest Indian to debut in international cricket at 15 years and 99 days, and the youngest player to score a half-century in men's international cricket at 15 years and 118 days. In the Asian Games gold-medal match against Pakistan, he scored a quick 15 with two sixes, while opening partner Abhishek Sharma hit 61 off 28 balls.
Gambhir is reluctant to split India's established opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Deccan Chronicle reported that the coach said this partnership has served India well over an extended period and has proven effective. The coach wants to provide team stability rather than constantly rotate young players in and out based on one strong outing.
India's bowling coach Morne Morkel stressed that learning opportunities exist for Sooryavanshi regardless of immediate playing time. Lokmat Times reported that Morkel emphasized the importance of Sooryavanshi continuing to develop and ask questions within the team environment. The coaching staff sees value in letting the young batter grow through exposure to training and team preparation.
Opening batter Abhishek Sharma has commended Sooryavanshi's development and progress. Daily Hunt reported that Sharma acknowledged the young player's talent and international debut as historic. He reinforced that making it in international cricket requires patience, and young players must earn their opportunities through continued hard work and improvement.
India begins their home T20I season with a five-match series against the West Indies from October 6–17. Deccan Chronicle noted that the back-to-back ICC Men's T20 World Cup champions will use this series to settle their opening combination and build consistency. Gambhir's selection approach will prioritize team balance over breaking in young players, even those with strong recent performances.
