California Leads Multi-State Lawsuit Challenging Federal Fuel Economy Rollbacks

California, along with nearly two dozen states, led by California, has sued the Trump administration over its decision to reduce fuel efficiency standards for cars, arguing that the move was based on a faulty analysis and violated federal law. The federal Transportation Department has announced it will sharply reduce fuel economy rules for new cars and light trucks, removing one of the Biden administration's most aggressive policies to reduce gasoline consumption and encourage automakers to shift towards electric vehicles. The new rules will require automakers to achieve an average fuel efficiency of 34.9 miles per gallon for new car and light truck in model year 2031, far below the figure of 50.4 m.p.g. set by the Biden Administration. This comes as part of an escalating legal battle between President Trump and California, where California has sued 97 times.
