Starbucks Launches Air-Whipped Aerocano Across North America for National Coffee Day

Starbucks is launching the Aerocano across North America on Sept. 29 for National Coffee Day. The iced drink is made with Blonde Espresso and ice, then air-whipped to create a light, creamy texture and a cascading visual effect; customers can also order it with caramel or other flavor additions. First introduced in South Korea, the beverage offers a coffee-forward take on an iced Americano. Starbucks is also adding Apple Crumble, Pecan and Pumpkin Mini Pies to menus alongside the drink.
The launch comes as Starbucks plans to close 250 North American stores this year and says it expects 1,500 stores to be retrofitted by Sept. 30.
In South Korea, where the Aerocano first launched, it became one of Starbucks’ most popular menu items, according to Starbucks Asia Pacific senior vice president Chanda Beppu.
Baristas aerate the drink by hand when it is ordered; Starbucks adjusted steam times and pouring methods during development to preserve the espresso flavor while producing the foam and cascading effect.
A PEOPLE tasting found that the Aerocano’s lack of milk or cold foam leaves a pure, coffee-forward flavor, with a silky texture that the reviewers said did not call for creamer.
