LG Display's OLED Panels Earn World-First Perfect Color and Brightness Certification from Intertek

LG Display said it became the world’s first company to earn Intertek’s “Perfect Color/Brightness Accuracy up to 500lux” certification, with coverage spanning its entire lineup of large OLED panels used in monitors and TVs (announced “Sunday” and described as a June 22 development).
Intertek described the certification as going beyond listing display specifications: Asiae reported Intertek is a “global mutual certification organization” and that it “quantitatively verifies” creator-intended color and brightness reproduction under ambient lighting (up to 500 lux), surpassing conventional tests that mainly list hardware limits like color range or peak luminance.
Intertek’s test method involved “precisely measured and quantified minute changes” in color and brightness at specific points on the screen using “various video test patterns,” evaluating how accurately the display reproduces changes across the panel rather than only checking global/spec-sheet metrics.
For LCDs, LG Display and related reporting highlighted concrete HDR scenarios: the backlight blocks (larger than pixels) and zone-based control can allow light to leak into adjacent zones, leading to lower-than-intended brightness in examples like “stars in a night sky or fireworks,” and some premium LCDs using RGB LEDs showed color distortion depending on the background color.

Intertek, a global product-testing and certification body, verified that LG Display's OLED panels hit 100% color accuracy and 100% brightness accuracy under 500 lux of ambient light — roughly the brightness of a well-lit living room or office. According to OLED-Info, it is the first time any large-scale OLED panel has achieved this recognition.
Most display tests happen in a pitch-black room. That boosts numbers like peak brightness and contrast on spec sheets, but it does not reflect how a TV looks in your home. Intertek's test flips that approach. It measures how accurately a display reproduces a creator's intended colors and brightness when ambient light is present — up to 500 lux, Korea Herald reported.
The test used standardized video test patterns to measure "minute changes" in color and brightness at specific points across the screen, according to OLED-Info. The goal is to check whether a panel reproduces those changes accurately — not just whether it can hit a high peak-brightness number. Hyun-woo Lee, head of LG Display's Large-Display Business Unit, said the certification "objectively proved that OLED perfectly and accurately implements the picture-quality values consumers need."
Each pixel in an OLED panel is its own light source. It turns on and off independently, giving precise control over brightness at every single point on the screen. LCD panels work differently — a backlight sits behind the entire screen, and even "zone-dimming" backlights control blocks of pixels rather than individual ones, OLED-Info noted.
That difference shows up in real scenes. In high-contrast content like fireworks or stars against a dark sky, LCD backlight zones can leak light into dark areas, reducing intended brightness. Some premium LCDs using RGB backlights also showed color distortion depending on the surrounding background color, according to Korea Herald. Under the same Intertek test, LCD panels did not reach 100% on both metrics. LG Display's OLEDs also recorded zero color crosstalk — meaning no pixel interfered with its neighbor.
The certification does not exist in a vacuum. LG Display now earns 61% of its revenue from OLED, up from much lower levels just a few years ago. The company has been pulling back from LCD manufacturing as Chinese rivals like BOE and TCL use subsidized production to undercut prices. Third-party certifications like this one help LG justify premium pricing in a crowded market.
LG Display holds a 49.7% share of the global OLED TV market, according to market research firm Omdia. Global OLED TV shipments reached 6.47 million units in 2025, up 6.6% year-over-year. The company's gross margin climbed to 13.83% in Q1 2026, compared to just 1.6% in 2023 — a sign that the OLED push is already paying off financially, Korea Herald reported.
This certification could pressure other display makers to seek similar ambient-light testing. Until now, the industry leaned on metrics like peak nits or color gamut percentages — numbers that look impressive on a box but tell buyers little about everyday performance. Intertek's 500-lux standard puts real-world fidelity at the center of the conversation.
For professional content creators and home cinema enthusiasts, the practical takeaway is meaningful. It means LG's certified OLED panels can function as reference-grade monitors even in a daylit room — not just in a darkened studio. Whether competitors follow with their own ambient-light certifications will be one of the key storylines in the premium display market going forward, according to Korea Herald.
