Apple's Foldable iPhone Duo Will Support USB-C Apple Pencil via Software Update

The iPhone Duo’s Apple Pencil-compatible inner display is a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR OLED with a 1,878-by-2,670-pixel resolution and 430 pixels per inch. It uses a custom polymer cover that Apple says is 40% stiffer than the industry standard, along with high-strength glass layers, a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-texture finish.
The Duo’s outer display is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says provides three times better scratch resistance; Apple has not said how either screen will withstand repeated contact with a Pencil tip or whether stylus performance differs between the two displays.
Apple Pencil support complements a broader multitasking upgrade in iOS 27: the foldable iPhone can run two apps side by side in Split View and open two windows of the same app simultaneously.
The Duo’s retail box contains only the phone and a 1-meter USB-C cable. Apple is also selling a $79 case and a $129 Folio separately, and has not announced a Pencil bundle price.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had reported that Apple tested a shorter, dedicated Pencil that would magnetically attach to and charge from the foldable phone, but that accessory apparently was abandoned in favor of compatibility with the existing USB-C Pencil.
Apple's iPhone Duo will support the Apple Pencil with USB-C on both its 7.6-inch inner display and 5.4-inch outer display, marking the first time an iPhone can work with a stylus Electronics Weekly. The feature will let users write notes, sketch, and mark up documents, but won't arrive at launch. Instead, Apple plans to add it through a software update later in 2026 Electronics Weekly.
The iPhone Duo launches October 23 with preorders starting October 16 at $1,999 Manx Radio. Apple has not confirmed whether it will support the Apple Pencil Pro, magnetic attachment, or wireless charging. The Pencil will be sold separately from the phone Electronics Weekly.
