Former Colombian President Santos Urges New Administration to Implement FARC Peace Accord

Former Colombian President, Abelardo De La Espriella, has called for the implementation of the FARC peace accord, which he negotiated and won the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize. De Laespriella criticised aspects of the deal during his election campaign, including the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), the transitional justice court tasked with investigating crimes committed during the conflict. Despite these criticisms, De La espriella said he would respect the special court's place in Colombia's judicial system, but would ensure rigorous oversight over the tribunal. The wide-ranging deal with FARC was built into Colombia's constitution, but many of its provisions are subject to governmental changes in strategy and focus. Santos' successors, Ivan Duque and Gustavo Petro, have not fully implemented the peace accord.
