Target cuts prices on nearly 2000 holiday items to attract budget-conscious shoppers

Target is cutting prices on nearly 2,000 home, apparel, footwear and accessories items to attract cost-conscious shoppers ahead of the holiday season. The reductions build on more than 10,000 price cuts over the past year; examples include women’s shoes averaging $35, down from $40 last year, children’s rain and winter boots about 15% cheaper, and bedding prices about 15% lower on average. The move comes amid cautious consumer spending and pressure on household budgets, with Target making value a priority as it contends with sluggish sales in apparel and home. Walmart and other retailers are also cutting prices, intensifying competition for holiday spending. Prices and availability may vary, and the program excludes Alaska and Hawaii.
Target said nearly 70% of its new shoe items are priced below last year's styles, and some apparel and footwear items are at least 20% cheaper than comparable items a year earlier.
Specific apparel discounts include women's long-sleeve T-shirts falling from $15 to $12; some bedding deals are on Target's Threshold and Room Essentials private-label products.
Target had already cut prices on about 3,000 products in March. Chief Merchandising Officer Cara Sylvester said the company aims to balance competitive pricing with merchandise quality and bring more affordable options across its assortment.
Target's October Circle Deal Days event is set to offer discounts on items including holiday decor and toys, competing with Amazon's Big Deal Days.
Retail Dive reported that University of Michigan data showed consumer sentiment had fallen to a four-month low, with higher fuel costs and renewed U.S. trade disputes weighing on households' assessments of economic conditions.
