Sky pays £1.6bn for ITV's broadcast and streaming assets, creating UK streaming giant.

Sky has agreed to pay £1.6 billion to acquire ITV's broadcast and streaming division, making it the owner of the UK's largest commercial broadcaster Radio Royal. The deal hands Sky control of the ITVX streaming platform and ITV's free-to-air channels, but leaves ITV's studio production arm out of the agreement.
The acquisition, valued at $2.1 billion in dollar terms, includes cash, an earn-out payment, and Love Productions — the company behind The Great British Bake Off Global Banking and Finance. All public service broadcasting commitments tied to ITV's channels will continue under Sky's ownership.
The deal is a direct response to the growing power of US streaming giants. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have eaten into audiences that once watched traditional UK broadcasters. By combining Sky's pay-TV muscle with ITVX's free streaming platform, the merged entity aims to offer a serious domestic rival Black Country Radio.
ITVX is ITV's on-demand and live streaming service. It draws tens of millions of users in the UK. Sky brings its own deep subscriber base and sports and news rights. Together, the two platforms cover free and paid streaming — a broader offering than either could build alone Three FM.
Sky is buying ITV's media and entertainment division. That means ITVX, the main ITV channel, and its family of free-to-air channels such as ITV2, ITVBe, and ITV4 Roch Valley Radio. The £1.6 billion price tag covers these assets plus Love Productions, the indie studio behind some of the UK's biggest entertainment formats.
ITV Studios — the production arm that makes drama, factual shows, and formats sold worldwide — is not part of the deal Global Banking and Finance. ITV keeps that business. This split lets ITV cash in on its broadcasting assets while holding on to its most globally valuable content-making operation.
Sky is owned by US cable giant Comcast, which bought it for £30 billion in 2018. Adding ITV's broadcast division gives Comcast a much bigger share of the UK TV market. Sky already owns Sky News, Sky Sports, and Sky Cinema — so this deal stacks ITV's reach on top of an already powerful portfolio Radio Royal.
The deal still needs regulatory approval. UK media regulators will look closely at whether one company owning both Sky News and ITV's news output raises concerns about media plurality — the spread of different voices in the news landscape Black Country Radio.
ITV's free-to-air channels carry legal obligations to air news, children's programming, and regional content. These are called public service broadcasting commitments. Both companies confirmed these duties will remain in place after the sale completes Three FM.
That pledge will matter to regulators and politicians. The UK government has spent years trying to protect public service broadcasting as audiences shift online. Keeping ITV's free channels accessible — and obligated to serve all UK viewers — was likely a condition both sides knew they had to honour to get the deal through Roch Valley Radio.
