Five Gang Members Receive Life Sentences for Three Lookout Murders and Robberies

Five MS-13 gang members received lengthy prison sentences on June 18, 2026, for a 48-hour killing spree at scenic lookouts in Pasadena and Rancho Palos Verdes that left three people dead in July 2023. Four of the five were sentenced to life without parole. Judge Ronald S. Coen called the killings "casual slaughter," saying the defendants showed "no mercy" to victims who were simply enjoying a view Press Enterprise.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the victims "were simply enjoying some of the most scenic views" when gang members targeted them to steal cell phones and wallets — and "kill them if necessary" Daily News.
Just after 3:30 a.m. on July 22, 2023, Marco Antonio Hernandez, Luis Ventura, and Abraham Ernesto Alvarenga Cortez drove to a lookout on Angeles Crest Highway in Pasadena. They ambushed 32-year-old Jessie Enrique Munoz and a female companion. When Munoz tried to reverse his car to escape, Cortez opened fire and killed him Daily Breeze.
Less than 48 hours later, Hernandez returned — this time to a lookout on the 7000 block of Palos Verdes Drive in Rancho Palos Verdes. He brought two new accomplices: Rossel Jose Hernandez-Ponce and Wendy Sarai Cerritos. The trio targeted Jorge Ramos, 36, and Taylor Raven Whittaker, 26, who were sitting in their Subaru. When the couple refused to hand over their valuables, Hernandez and Hernandez-Ponce shot and killed both of them Press Telegram.
On July 25, 2023 — just three days after the first killing — a multi-agency task force led by the U.S. Marshals arrested all five suspects in Panorama City. Investigators recovered two semi-automatic handguns. One of the guns was ballistically linked to both murder scenes SB Sun.
All five defendants were identified as MS-13 members operating out of Pacoima and Panorama City in the San Fernando Valley. A Los Angeles jury convicted all five of first-degree murder and robbery charges after just about one day of deliberation in June 2026 OC Register.
Hernandez, who took part in all three killings, was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole. At sentencing, Silas Ramos, father of Jorge Ramos, said the defendants "deserve the death penalty" — though California has a moratorium on executions. Rosalina Rodriguez, mother of Jessie Munoz, said she was "blessed that justice is being served" but remained devastated by the loss of her son Daily Breeze.
The case has pushed local officials to act. Rancho Palos Verdes and Pasadena have both discussed adding more surveillance cameras and license plate readers at popular overlooks.
