WhatsApp Rolls Out New Restricted Chat Feature to Beta Users on Mobile

WhatsApp is rolling out a new Restricted Chat feature to beta testers on Android and iOS. The feature adds four major limits to conversations: users cannot download media, export chats, use Meta AI, or access the chat on linked devices News18. The restrictions are optional and don't apply to chats automatically.
Beta users running WhatsApp version 2.36.4 on Android or 26.39.10.20 on iOS can test the feature now Economic Times. WhatsApp hasn't announced when the feature will roll out to all users.
The Restricted Chat feature blocks four key actions within a conversation ANI News. Users cannot save media files to their devices. They cannot export or back up the chat. They cannot use Meta AI features like summaries or replies. And the chat stays locked to the primary phone only.
These restrictions prevent linked devices from accessing the conversation Glitched. If you use WhatsApp on a tablet or computer, a restricted chat won't appear there. This keeps sensitive messages and media confined to one device only.
The core purpose is simple: stop private chats from syncing to linked devices QNA. WhatsApp users often link tablets, computers, or other phones to their account. Restricted Chat prevents selected conversations from appearing on those secondary devices.
This addresses a real privacy gap. Someone who borrows your linked tablet can't see your restricted chats. Your spouse, coworker, or child who uses a shared computer won't find those conversations there QNA.
The feature is currently limited to select beta testers News18. Android users need version 2.36.4 or newer. iOS users need version 26.39.10.20 or newer. Most regular users don't have access yet.
WhatsApp has not disclosed a timeline for the public release Economic Times. The company often tests features for weeks or months before rolling them out broadly. Users who want early access should join the WhatsApp beta program.
