Samsung is reportedly developing color-display smart glasses targeted for release by 2028.

Samsung is reportedly targeting limited color depth of about 4 bits per color channel—16 brightness levels per channel—because the display is intended for legible text and interface elements rather than detailed photos or video.
Samsung has reportedly issued Samsung Display a formal request for the microdisplay, specifying requirements including the panel’s form factor, active display area, color-reproduction capabilities and target price.
For comparison, Meta’s Ray-Ban Display reportedly uses a 600-by-600-pixel monocular screen with an approximately 20-degree field of view positioned in the right lens, whereas Samsung is considering placing information across the front of the lens.
Industry sources reportedly view RGB OLED-on-silicon as more expensive and difficult to manufacture because of lower yields, while LED-on-silicon could offer greater brightness but presents challenges for full-color integration.

LED-on-silicon could be brighter but creates challenges when adding full color. Samsung has reportedly favored white OLED-on-silicon with color filters as the most practical choice for cost and reliability.
Samsung plans to use just 4 bits of color information per channel. That gives only 16 brightness levels per color, which is enough for clear text and interface icons but not for photos or video. Android Central explains this limited color depth matches the glasses' purpose: showing legible notifications and navigation arrows, not entertainment content.
Samsung has not yet chosen between placing the display in one lens or both lenses. Real Hacker notes that Meta's Ray-Ban Display uses a single monocular screen with a 600-by-600-pixel resolution and about 20 degrees of visible area on the right lens. Samsung is considering spreading information across the front of the lens instead, which would affect how many pixels and how much brightness the display needs.
Samsung's first AI glasses, arriving around 2026, will skip the display entirely and work through audio and a phone connection. 9to5Google reports that the color-display model is planned for 2027 or 2028. This two-stage approach lets Samsung launch basic AI glasses quickly while it perfects the more complex technology for adding a screen. The company is working with Google on the software side for both versions.
