Punjab Congress Chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring Resigns Following Factional Tensions

Congress sources said Sachin Pilot’s consultations found that Warring had lost the confidence of a majority of senior state leaders.
The rift included public challenges to Warring’s authority by former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and supporters; dissenters also boycotted joint party events and pressed for organisational restructuring. An earlier attempt to ease tensions appointed Channi campaign committee chair while retaining Warring as state chief.
Besides Singla and Pargat Singh, Congress sources said Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi were also being considered for the post.
Warring took charge as Punjab Congress president in April 2022 after the party lost the Assembly election, and later won the Ludhiana parliamentary seat in 2024.
Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring resigned on October 1 after the party's leadership decided to replace him. ABP Live reports that Warring met with senior leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi before stepping down. The move ends his four-and-a-half-year tenure following weeks of internal conflict that left him isolated from senior state leaders.
Warring said he remains a "disciplined soldier of the party" and will serve wherever assigned. Baba Shahi reports that newly appointed Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot conducted consultations across the state and found that Warring had lost the confidence of a majority of senior leaders. Congress now prepares to name his successor ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election.
Factionalism gripped Punjab Congress for months before Warring's ouster. Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and allies openly challenged Warring's authority and boycotted joint party events. The Daily Jagran notes that the party attempted to ease tensions in July by appointing Channi as campaign committee chair while keeping Warring as state chief—but dissenters remained unsatisfied.
Congress sources said six of seven Punjab MPs sided with Channi's faction against Warring. Sachin Pilot's September consultations confirmed that deep divisions made Warring's position untenable. Party leaders pressed for organizational restructuring and new direction heading into the 2027 state elections, where Congress aims to challenge the ruling AAP.
Multiple candidates are being considered to replace Warring. The Daily Jagran reports that Vijay Inder Singla, a former minister and close confidant of Rahul Gandhi, is a frontrunner. Singla told ANI News: "I am a loyal soldier of the party. Whatever responsibility I have been given, I have always fulfilled my duties." He currently serves as AICC Joint Treasurer and Congress Working Committee member.
Pargat Singh, a Jalandhar legislator, also ranks high on the list. The Daily Jagran indicates that Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi are also being considered. Congress is expected to announce the successor within 24 to 48 hours, according to party sources.
Warring took charge as Punjab Congress president in April 2022 after the party's crushing defeat in state elections. The Congress won only 18 seats while the AAP swept to power with 92 of 117 seats. Despite his later victory in the Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat in 2024, Warring struggled to unite the fractured state organization.
The party's central leadership viewed the leadership change as essential before the 2027 state elections. Sachin Pilot's assessment report triggered the decision to replace Warring. ABP Live indicates that party officials believe a new state chief can better unite factions and mount a credible challenge against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's AAP government.
