Short interest in robotics ETFs surges sharply as institutional holdings increase across funds.

Short interest rose sharply in two robotics-focused ETFs in September. VanEck Robotics ETF (IBOT) short interest increased 119.2% to 20,749 shares, equal to about 1.3% of shares outstanding. Themes Robotics & Automation ETF (BOTT) saw a 200.1% increase to 36,551 shares, or about 2.3% of shares outstanding. Both funds also reported new or increased institutional holdings, while BOTT was trading well below its 52-week high.
Despite the increase in short positions, IBOT's short interest represented 1.5 days of average trading volume, while BOTT's represented 1.7 days.
IBOT tracks the BlueStar Robotics Index, which selects global companies based on revenue tied to early adoption of commercial and industrial robotics; the fund launched in April 2023.
BOTT is passively managed and follows an equally weighted index of 30 companies in developed countries focused on industrial robotics and automation; it launched in April 2024.
IBOT traded at $64.56 in Monday midday trading, with a 52-week range of $47.92 to $69.42 and a market capitalization of about $102 million.
