Data Shows Off-Label Testosterone Improves Multiple Menopause Symptoms

At its first public workshop on testosterone use in menopausal women, the FDA heard that evidence is strongest for treating hypoactive sexual desire disorder, while potential effects on energy, mood, memory and muscle need more study. Testosterone is not FDA-approved for women, though off-label prescribing has grown. A Hone Health analysis of 1,220 peri- and postmenopausal women taking testosterone without estrogen or progesterone found reported improvements across 18 symptoms, especially sexual desire, energy, strength and stamina; the patient-reported findings do not by themselves establish treatment effectiveness.
Prescriptions of testosterone to women nearly tripled between 2016 and 2025, according to the articles.
Hone assessed menopause symptoms using a standard questionnaire that health care providers use to track how menopause affects daily life.
Hone-affiliated physician Natalie Kunsman said symptom tracking captures only part of testosterone’s effects: “Tracking specific symptoms is like looking through a keyhole when we know testosterone is working the whole room.”
The FDA workshop also raised questions about how women can use testosterone safely and what would be needed to develop standardized treatments designed for women’s bodies.
