Indiana Prepares for First Road Game at Rutgers Following Inconsistent Win

Cignetti said Indiana’s offense took about 22 minutes to get going, and 12 of its first 25 plays involved penalties, missed assignments or missed opportunities. He believed the Hoosiers should have led by four scores at halftime, rather than 12-0.
Cignetti noted that Indiana scored on five of its final six offensive drives, but also singled out a costly mistake: the Hoosiers dropped a kickoff they had fair-caught at their own 2-yard line.
Rutgers expects a homecoming sellout and blackout at SHI Stadium, with about 56,000 fans expected for the game, according to Cignetti.
Cignetti also praised Rutgers offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca, saying he does a nice job with the offense, and said the Scarlet Knights’ other receivers are developing.
Indiana faces its first true road test Saturday at Rutgers, looking to build on a sloppy 29-23 win over Northwestern in its Big Ten opener. Coach Curt Cignetti warned that the Hoosiers' inconsistent play—including early offensive penalties and late defensive breakdowns—must improve against a Scarlet Knights team with dangerous offensive weapons. Fox Sports reported Indiana opened as a 24.5-point favorite, with the over/under set at 55.5.
The Hoosiers' offense struggled early against Northwestern, taking about 22 minutes to find rhythm. Cignetti said 12 of Indiana's first 25 plays involved penalties, missed assignments, or missed opportunities. He believed the team should have led by four scores at halftime instead of just 12-0.
Indiana's defense also faltered late, allowing a costly kickoff mistake when the Hoosiers dropped a fair-caught ball at their own 2-yard line. Despite those struggles, Indiana scored on five of its final six offensive drives to secure the road victory.
Rutgers enters Saturday with a potent passing game and several playmakers on offense. Cignetti specifically highlighted receiver KJ Duff and running back Antwan Raymond as scoring threats the Hoosiers must contain. He also praised Rutgers offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca, saying he does a nice job with the offense, and noted the Scarlet Knights' other receivers are developing.
Rutgers expects a full house at SHI Stadium for Saturday's matchup. According to Cignetti, about 56,000 fans are expected for the game, with the athletic department planning a blackout event for homecoming. The road environment will test Indiana's communication and execution early.
