BioNTech to close three German plants and cut 1,800 jobs amid falling demand.

BioNTech will close three German production sites in Idar-Oberstein, Marburg and Tübingen after failing to find buyers, affecting about 1,800 employees; the company also plans to shut its Singapore facility. The German sites are scheduled to close between late 2027 and late 2028, and BioNTech says market and investment conditions thwarted the sale effort. The closures reflect the company’s move away from pandemic-era vaccine production amid weaker COVID-19 vaccine demand, cost-cutting and a growing focus on cancer medicines. BioNTech and employee representatives have agreed on additional severance terms, but the company has not disclosed details.
BioNTech said the restructuring is part of transferring COVID-19 vaccine production to its partner Pfizer.
The Marburg plant has made mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and plasmid DNA, a raw material used in mRNA vaccines and cell therapies; the Idar-Oberstein site makes products for early clinical development.
BioNTech reported a first-half loss of €1.35 billion, compared with €802.4 million in the same period a year earlier.
BioNTech’s two co-founders were expected to leave by the end of the year to start a new venture.
