Phillies Force Game 3 Against Braves After Dramatic Extra-Inning Victory

The Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 in Game 1 of the best-of-three National League Wild Card Series when Austin Riley hit a three-run homer off closer Jhoan Duran in the eighth inning. Philadelphia evened the series in Game 2, rallying from a 3-1 deficit with consecutive eighth-inning homers by Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper before Alec Bohm hit a solo homer in the 10th for a 4-3 win. Phillies pitcher Andrew Painter secured the victory by striking out Dominic Smith on an automated ball-strike challenge. The series is tied 1-1, with a winner-take-all Game 3 scheduled for Thursday in Atlanta.
Austin Riley’s Game 1 homer was his third postseason go-ahead home run in the eighth inning or later, tying him with Troy Glaus, Bernie Williams, Jose Altuve and Freddie Freeman for the most in postseason history.
Riley had struggled during the regular season, batting .219 with 19 home runs and 72 RBIs while striking out a franchise-record 201 times in 159 games. His Game 1 homer traveled 385 feet and came off a 99.9 mph fastball.
Atlanta took a 3-1 lead into the eighth after Drake Baldwin’s RBI double broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh and Matt Olson added a sacrifice fly. Braves starter Tyler Mahle had held Philadelphia to one run over seven innings.
The Braves left 11 runners on base in Game 2, including a bases-loaded, one-out opportunity in the sixth that produced no runs.
