AI Regulation Stalls in Congress as Lawmakers Debate Safety and Costs

Congress is debating how to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) but it seems unlikely as key leaders prevent swift action. Anthropic CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei, along with current and former employees of major AI companies, have raised concerns about the development of AI. President Donald Trump has dismissed these warnings as a hoax, suggesting nefarious actors may be behind the effort to regulate the technology. Other proposals include a "kill switch law" that could allow the federal government to shut down AI systems if they become out of control. However, many lawmakers still do not fully understand the threat of AI and it is difficult to build support for specific legislation. While legislation is stalled, the House is set to vote on the Ratepayer Protection Act, a bill aimed at reducing the financial impact of data centers on nearby communities.
