Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Tyquan Thornton Susters Indefinite Ankle Injury

Chiefs coach Andy Reid described Thornton as a leader among the receivers and praised his attitude, saying he had been having a phenomenal year and that the injury was tough for the team to see.
Thornton signed a two-year, $11 million contract with Kansas City, giving him the chance to rebuild his on-field value in 2027 before becoming a free agent again.
Mahomes said Thornton is “one of the best teammates I’ve ever had” and related to the emotional toll of a major injury, recalling his own season-ending knee injury the previous year.
Hill was targeting a November return from his serious left-knee injury; in four appearances last season, he recorded 21 receptions for 265 yards and one touchdown.
Kansas City's perfect season stayed intact with a 30-27 win over Las Vegas, but the Chiefs suffered a major blow when wide receiver Tyquan Thornton dislocated his left ankle late in the fourth quarter. FOX Sports reported that Thornton, who had five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns, was carted off after a 55-yard catch. Team doctors reset the ankle on the sideline, but NBC Sports confirmed he is out indefinitely with no recovery timeline as medical staff conduct further evaluation.
The injury deepens Kansas City's receiving crisis. Rashee Rice left earlier in the game with a hamstring strain and did not return, forcing the 4-0 Chiefs to look at free-agent options. ESPN reported that Kansas City has stayed in contact with Tyreek Hill, the star receiver recovering from a knee injury, as Patrick Mahomes signaled openness to a reunion.
With 3:35 left and the score tight, Mahomes found Thornton deep downfield for a 55-yard reception that moved the ball to the Raiders 5-yard line. Heavy documented that Raiders safety Treydan Stukes tackled Thornton from behind using a hip-drop tackle. Thornton initially tried to stand and celebrate, then realized his left ankle was dislocated and collapsed back to the turf. Medical staff applied an air cast and transported him off the field on a cart.
Head coach Andy Reid called Thornton a "leader of that group" and highlighted his impact on the team. According to FOX Sports, Reid said: "That's a rough one when you see your teammate, especially a guy like Tyquan who is a great father, a great husband... His attitude is unbelievable... he had a phenomenal year to this point." Reid emphasized how tough the injury was for teammates to witness.
Patrick Mahomes, who suffered a season-ending knee injury the previous year, empathized with Thornton's situation. According to the Chiefs' statement, Mahomes called Thornton "one of the best teammates I've ever had." He noted the difficult reality: "It's tough because those guys put in so much work. I was in that spot last year... to play the game they love, and one play can kind of change your season." Mahomes indicated he would welcome a chance to reunite with free-agent Tyreek Hill to shore up the receiving corps.
Thornton signed a two-year, $11 million contract with Kansas City to rebuild his market value before 2027 free agency. With him and Rice sidelined, NBC Sports reported that Kansas City has maintained contact with Hill's representatives. Hill is targeting a November return from his serious left-knee injury and recorded 21 receptions for 265 yards and one touchdown across four games last season before the injury. His arrival could provide critical depth as the Chiefs navigate the rest of the season without their two top receivers.
