Shubman Gill Smashes Record 223 to Lead India to ODI Series Victory

India chased the West Indies’ record 405-7 to win the second ODI in Guwahati by eight wickets, reaching 406 with 39 balls to spare and sealing the series 2-0. Captain Shubman Gill finished unbeaten on 223 from 133 balls, reaching his second ODI double century in 117 deliveries to set a record for the fastest double hundred; he is the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score multiple ODI double centuries. Gill also became the first captain to score double centuries in both Test and ODI cricket. Rohit scored 101 in a 255-run opening stand with Gill, and became the third Indian and seventh player overall to pass 12,000 ODI runs. West Indies’ John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo also scored centuries, making it a match featuring five hundreds.
Gill’s 223 not out became the highest individual score in a successful ODI run chase, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan.
India’s chase was the second-highest in ODI history; the record remains South Africa’s 438-run chase against Australia in 2006.
Gill’s latest double century came 1,351 days after his first, a 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023.
Gill dealt with cramping during his innings but continued to bat through it.
