Idaho Stuns Top-Ranked Montana State With Last-Second Touchdown and Winning Conversion

Montana State had not won at Idaho’s Kibbie Dome since 1990; Idaho’s 2023 win there was another of the few Big Sky losses under coach Brent Vigen.
The teams had met 48 times before the game, with Idaho leading the all-time series 26-21-1; Montana State had won four of the previous five matchups.
Idaho struck quickly in the first quarter: Joshua Wood connected with Ryan Jezioro for a 75-yard touchdown, putting the Vandals ahead 7-3.
In Montana State’s preceding win over Northern Arizona, backup Patrick Duchien threw for 204 yards and ran for 77, while Colson Coon rushed for 197 yards and Carter Dahlke had 117 receiving yards.
Idaho shocked No. 1 Montana State 35-34 on the final play of the game, ending the Bobcats' 19-game winning streak in stunning fashion. Saturday Down South reported that quarterback Joshua Wood threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to seal the victory, then ran in the game-winning two-point conversion as time expired. The win marked Idaho's first victory of the season and the program's first-ever win over a top-ranked opponent.
Montana State entered the matchup undefeated but was missing three key offensive players: starting quarterback Justin Lamson, receiver Taco Dowler, and running back Adam Jones. AOL noted that backup Patrick Duchien started in their place, while Central Oregon Daily highlighted the controversial nature of the final drive, as Idaho covered 80 yards in just 49 seconds to orchestrate the stunning upset.
Joshua Wood engineered Idaho's miraculous final drive, executing under extreme pressure with the Bobcats undefeated. According to Yahoo Sports, Wood's 25-yard touchdown pass with time expiring forced Montana State to defend the two-point conversion. Wood then took the ball himself, rushing into the end zone to clinch Idaho's 35-34 victory and deliver the program's biggest upset in school history.
The Bobcats faced the Vandals severely shorthanded on offense. Without starting quarterback Justin Lamson, receiver Taco Dowler, and running back Adam Jones, Montana State leaned on backup Patrick Duchien and a depleted roster. In their previous game against Northern Arizona, Duchien threw for 204 yards and rushed for 77, while Colson Coon added 197 rushing yards. The injuries may have cost them in Boise.
Montana State had ruled Idaho's home field for generations. The Bobcats had not won at Kibbie Dome since 1990, a 35-year drought that underscored Idaho's home-field advantage. Even so, Idaho's victories at home against ranked opponents had been rare under coach Brent Vigen. This stunning upset ended one of college football's most one-sided rivalries in recent years.
The two programs have played 48 times all-time, with Idaho leading the series 26-21-1. However, Montana State had won four of the previous five matchups, seizing control of the rivalry in recent seasons. Saturday Down South highlighted how this loss disrupted Montana State's momentum as the defending FCS champion heading into the 2026 season.
