Michigan begins the Whittingham era with a dramatic final-play Hail Mary victory.

Michigan began the Kyle Whittingham era with a 13-12 victory over Western Michigan at Michigan Stadium. The game ended on a 47-yard Hail Mary from Bryce Underwood to JJ Buchanan on the final play. Underwood was 12 of 22 for 170 yards, one touchdown, an interception and a fumble. Despite a strong start to the game, Michigan struggled and had three turnovers, including one on special teams. The Broncos took a 9-7 lead with 35 seconds left on a 33-yard field goal from Dieter Kelly. Michigan's defense held Western to 94 yards and was credited with 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss.
