India's Opposition Bloc Launches Nationwide Campaign Over Electoral Roll Concerns

India’s opposition INDIA bloc announced a coordinated “Save Democracy” campaign from October 2 to 8, with district-level marches and demonstrations over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and concerns about the Election Commission. Opposition MPs plan to march to the Commission on October 6, and the bloc will request a meeting with the President in the second week of October. It also plans five major rallies, including one in Delhi on November 1, and has called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign; some leaders have also demanded a return to paper ballots. Opposition leaders accused the Commission of political bias and electoral wrongdoing, allegations rejected by the BJP and the Commission. The alliance said it would pursue the campaign together and involve civil society groups and other supporters.
