New documentary uses controversial artificial intelligence to digitally recreate serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

New documentary, "Unmasking A Monster: Aileen Wuornos," uses AI to bring the notorious serial killer to life. The three-part episode was produced for Investigation Discovery by Arrow Media and will air on HBO and HBO Max on Sept. 30. The production used VFX techniques and digital replication to bring Wuorno, a serial killer who was executed in 2002. Actor Morag Peacock played Wuornonos in the documentary, whose performance was molded around a "digital mask" based on archival transcripts, documented evidence and firsthand accounts. Stephen Dost, vice president of content at Arrow Media, criticised the use of AI to replace actors, stating that it can transform something real into a three-dimensional mask. The documentary did not receive permission from both the production team and the real-life actors.
