India Finishes Fourth With 85 Medals At Asian Games 2026

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games concludes today with a closing ceremony at Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Japan, marking the end of a 15-day sporting spectacle. India finished fourth overall with 85 medals—21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze—according to Daijiworld.
Shooting champion Neeru Dhanda, a 27-year-old trap shooter who won two gold medals at these Games, has been named India's women's flag-bearer for the closing ceremony. She returned to Japan on October 3 after briefly going home with a mild fever, MyKhel reported, calling it "a big honour."
Neeru Dhanda emerged as India's standout athlete with three medals. On September 29, she scored 28/30 in the individual women's trap—an Asian record. Days later, she partnered with Kynan Chenai to win the mixed trap team event with a joint Asian record of 34 points, according to Daily Hunt.
After scoring those medals, Dhanda left for home in Haryana due to illness. Deputy Chef de Mission Anjali Bhagwat called her back on October 2 to carry India's flag at the closing ceremony. Dhanda said she boarded a flight immediately: "She asked me to be the flag bearer. It's a big honour. I didn't want to let it go," MyKhel reported.
India's 85-medal haul marks the second consecutive top-4 finish at the Asian Games. Archery, shooting, cricket, kabaddi, and women's hockey drove the medal count, News18 reported. The performance demonstrates India's consistency in Olympic-focused disciplines heading toward Los Angeles 2028.
The 495-member Indian contingent competed across 36 sports during the 15-day Games. While the 85 medals represented a strong showing, the total fell short of India's record 107 medals from the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, signaling areas where Indian athletes need improvement.
The closing ceremony takes place today at Mizuho Park in Nagoya, where the opening ceremony was also held. Daily Hunt reports the event airs at 2:30 PM on Sony Sports Network in India, with live streaming available online for viewers across the country.
The ceremony will feature traditional closing proceedings, including the parade of nations and formal conclusion of the 20th Asian Games. India's contingent will march behind Dhanda, who carries the Tricolour—capping a two-week competition that showcased athletic excellence across Asia.
