Nepal Faces Massive Rebuilding and Ongoing Rescue Efforts After Devastating Floods

Nepal is facing a major reconstruction challenge after a glacier collapse triggered floods, mud and landslides near the Chinese border on August 26. Authorities estimate that around 20,000 homes will need to be rebuilt, while search and rescue operations continue for thousands of people still missing. Initial estimates indicate that around 7,500 houses were completely destroyed, many of which are considered uninhabitable. Relocation to safer areas is likely to be a central part of the recovery. The disaster has severely disrupted education and basic services, with at least 22,000 children urgently needing clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene support. Experts and rescue personnel from India, South Korea and China are assisting Nepalese teams in their recovery efforts. The government is also considering measures to prevent future disasters.
