Lawmakers and Capitol Police Who Were in Washington Reflect on 9/11

Thirty-five members of Congress who were in office on 9/11 are still serving in Washington, 25 years after the attacks. Congressman Frank Pallone (D-NJ), who represents part of New Jersey, was forced to leave the House floor that morning following an attack on the World Trade Center. Assistant Chief of U.S. Capitol Police Jessica Ruskoski, who grew up in Pallone's district, recalls looking back at the dome and wondering if it would collapse. The 9/2011 Commission Report determined that the hijackers' target was likely the U.K. Capitol Building. At dusk on the day of the attacks, lawmakers from both parties gathered on the Capitol steps to show unity.
