Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced a Times of India₹1 crore cash award for each of three women's kabaddi players from the state who won gold at the Asian Games. The award came after the players objected that the original ₹33 lakh offer fell short of their sports-policy entitlement. Pushpa Rana, Jyoti Thakur, and Bhawna Thakur will also receive government jobs in the Youth Services and Sports Department or police positions.
Sukhu separately announced a ₹1 crore award for women's cricket fast bowler Renuka Thakur. Daily Hunt reported that the Chief Minister met the athletes in Shimla and presented them with traditional Himachali caps and shawls to honor their achievement.
The ₹1 crore award represents a major increase from the state's initial offer of ₹33 lakh per player. Asianet News reported that Sukhu raised the prize money after the kabaddi players objected to the original amount. The players argued it did not match what their sports policy guaranteed them for gold-medal achievements.
Beyond the ₹1 crore cash award, Sukhu promised government positions to Pushpa Rana, Jyoti Thakur, and Bhawna Thakur. ANI News reported that the players can choose roles in the Youth Services and Sports Department. Those who prefer not to take police positions can select alternative positions instead.
Sukhu announced that the state would hold a separate felicitation ceremony to hand over the prize money to the kabaddi players. The Hindu Sportstar reported that the Chief Minister said Himachal Pradesh has revised its sports policy to increase prize money across the board. He also pledged to strengthen sports infrastructure throughout the state to support future athletes.
The women's kabaddi team secured gold at the Asian Games after a tight final. Daily Hunt reported that India defeated Iran 37-34 to win the championship. The victory made the three Himachal Pradesh players eligible for the state's highest sports honors.
