Houston Texans Wide Receiver Nico Collins Faces Injury Threat Ahead of Sunday Matchup

If Collins cannot play, Houston would enter Week 2 with only four fully healthy wide receivers on its current roster, further exposing the team’s limited depth at the position.
Collins has missed games because of injuries in each of his first five NFL seasons, including five games for a hamstring injury in 2024; a Week 2 absence would extend that streak to six consecutive seasons.
Houston needs a win against Cincinnati to avoid an 0-2 start, with the game framed as a matchup between AFC playoff hopefuls.
Doctors reportedly do not view the injury as serious, but hamstring injuries can linger, and returning before the issue is resolved could aggravate the original injury.
Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain during Wednesday practice, putting his availability for Sunday's game against Cincinnati in jeopardy. ESPN reported Collins missed Thursday's media-access practice and is not expected to play, according to KPRC 2. The injury threatens the Texans' already thin receiving corps heading into a critical Week 2 matchup.
Collins caught 7 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown in Houston's 36-31 Week 1 loss to Buffalo. An 0-2 start would put the Texans in dire straits, making Sunday's game against the Bengals essential. The team is already without receiver Jayden Higgins for the season and has Tank Dell on injured reserve.
Collins underwent an MRI on Wednesday that confirmed the Grade 1 hamstring strain — the lowest severity rating. Team doctors reportedly view the injury as non-serious, with no major muscle tearing detected. Medical consensus shows Grade 1 strains typically take 1 to 3 weeks to fully heal.
However, Pro Football Rumors warns that returning too soon could aggravate the soft tissue and cause long-term damage. Collins' history of hamstring problems adds concern — he missed five games in 2024 due to a similar injury.
Houston's receiving depth is already fragile. The team lost Jayden Higgins to a season-ending ACL tear in preseason. Tank Dell remains on injured reserve. If Collins misses Sunday, the Texans enter Week 2 with only four fully healthy wide receivers on the active roster.
Xavier Hutchinson and Kayshon Boutte face expanded roles if Collins cannot play. Hutchinson told reporters: "We all prepare like we're receiver No. 1... You've got to be delusional about yourself." The Texans may also elevate practice squad receiver Mitchell Tinsley and rely more on tight end formations.
This would mark the sixth consecutive NFL season Collins has missed games due to injury. He has dealt with soft-tissue issues repeatedly since entering the league. NBC Sports emphasizes Houston must exercise extreme caution given his value to quarterback C.J. Stroud.
In Week 1, Stroud targeted 11 different receivers as the offense spread the ball around. Cincinnati's revamped defense recorded four sacks and four forced fumbles against Tampa Bay, making the loss of Collins even more painful for Houston's pass game.
Cincinnati benefits significantly if Collins cannot play. Stripe Hype calls his potential absence a "massive break" for the Bengals' defense heading into Week 2. The matchup was framed as a battle between AFC playoff hopefuls, but losing Collins tilts the advantage sharply toward Cincinnati.
Houston needs a win to stay alive in the AFC South and avoid falling into an 0-2 hole early. That task becomes considerably harder without one of the team's few proven playmakers in the passing game.
