India September auto retail hits record 25.37 lakh units amid festive demand.

Retail sales of electric vehicles across all categories reached a record monthly high of about 3.34 lakh units in September, with EVs accounting for around 13% of total vehicle retail sales.
Within passenger vehicles, CNG models made up 23.11% of sales and hybrids 9.44%, alongside the 8.45% share for EVs.
Tractor sales fell 12.58% from August, the only major category to decline month over month; FADA attributed the drop to the later festive calendar and patchy monsoon conditions.
Wheeled construction-equipment retail sales increased 38% year over year to 6,486 units in September.
Dealer expectations were upbeat but not unanimous: 78.28% expected growth momentum to continue in October-November, while 75.57% anticipated growth in October as festive demand picked up.
India's vehicle retail sales hit a record 25.37 lakh units in September, jumping 31.82% year over year, FADA reported. Passenger vehicles alone reached 4.27 lakh units — also a September record — as festive demand and easier affordability drove buyers into showrooms. But the industry cautioned that the massive year-over-year surge masks a simpler story: buyers had delayed purchases ahead of GST 2.0 rollout in September 2025, creating an artificially low comparison base.
The September boom extended across nearly every vehicle type. Two-wheelers jumped 33.08%, commercial vehicles surged 37.62% — topping 100,000 units for the first time in a September — and three-wheelers rose 22.25%. Electric vehicles hit a record monthly high of about 3.34 lakh units across all categories, accounting for roughly 13% of total retail sales. Tractor sales were the lone laggard, falling 12.58% month over month due to patchy monsoon conditions and a later festive calendar.
Inside the passenger-vehicle category, the fuel-mix shifted dramatically. Petrol and alternative-fuel vehicles were nearly tied at 41.27% and 41% of sales respectively. Electric vehicles claimed 8.45% of passenger sales — a gain driven by improved affordability and festive purchasing. CNG models made up 23.11% of passenger sales, while hybrids captured 9.44%, showing Rediff that Indian buyers increasingly want cleaner drivetrains.
Passenger-vehicle sales in the first half of FY27 also hit a record, rising at nearly identical rates in urban and rural markets — a sign of broad-based demand rather than city-centric growth. Overall vehicle retail sales for the half climbed 20.77% to a record level, MENAFN reported. This expansion reflects a maturing market where affordability schemes and festive promotions are reaching beyond metropolitan areas into smaller towns and villages.
Dealer sentiment was largely upbeat. According to FADA, 78.28% of dealers expected growth to continue through October-November, while 75.57% predicted momentum in October as festive season demand picked up. However, dealers warned that recent price increases could dent momentum in coming months. Construction equipment sales also surged, with wheeled construction-equipment retail jumping 38% year over year to 6,486 units, suggesting infrastructure spending remains brisk.
