Bar-Ilan University Mathematics Lecturer Indicted in Alleged Mass Terror Plot

Prosecutors say the lecturer called the plan “AYT,” a Hebrew acronym meaning “The People Will Carry Out Transfer.”
The alleged recruitment plan called for activists to be invited to a Zehut election event without being told its purpose; prosecutors say they would be informed there that an attack was planned for the next day and given operational instructions.
The indictment allegedly envisioned 72 attackers divided into 12 six-person cells, with at least half licensed gun owners; weapons would include handguns, rifles, axes and hammers.
Prosecutors also allege that the lecturer sought to recruit IDF members who could assist with the attack.
An Israeli mathematics lecturer in his 60s at Bar-Ilan University was indicted on charges of planning coordinated mass attacks intended to kill hundreds of Arabs and Palestinians. TRT World reports prosecutors allege he spent more than three years recruiting armed participants into multiple cells and preparing operational documents. The plan, prosecutors say, intensified after the October 2023 outbreak of the Iron Swords War.
The lecturer faces charges of preparing a terrorist act, extortion by threats, and obstruction of justice. Middle East Eye reports he allegedly tried to recruit Zehut chairman Moshe Feiglin and threatened him after Feiglin refused to cooperate. Bar-Ilan University suspended the lecturer and condemned the alleged conduct.
Prosecutors allege the lecturer called his plan "AYT," a Hebrew acronym meaning "The People Will Carry Out Transfer." World Israel News reports the indictment describes a structure of 72 attackers divided into 12 six-person cells. At least half were licensed gun owners. Weapons planned included handguns, rifles, axes, and hammers.
The alleged recruitment strategy was carefully disguised. Middle East Eye explains that activists would be invited to a Zehut political event without knowing its true purpose. Only at the event would they learn an attack was planned for the next day and receive operational instructions.
Prosecutors say the lecturer sought to recruit Israeli Defense Force members who could assist with the planned attacks. Belaaz News reports this represented an attempt to draw active military personnel into the alleged terror plot. The indictment reveals an expansive recruitment effort across civilian and military networks.
The lecturer allegedly made a direct recruitment pitch to Moshe Feiglin, chairman of the Zehut political party. Head Topics reports that when Feiglin refused to cooperate, the lecturer allegedly threatened him. This failed recruitment and subsequent threats became part of the criminal charges.
Bar-Ilan University moved swiftly to suspend the lecturer from his position pending the legal proceedings. The university issued a statement condemning the alleged conduct. Prosecutors are seeking to keep the lecturer in custody through trial. His identity remains under a gag order.
