Massive Rockstar Leak Reveals Canceled GTA Content And 2027 Multiplayer Plans

The newly public material originated from a 2023 leak and was released through a debug build of Grand Theft Auto 5 for PlayStation 3, allowing dataminers to examine actual assets rather than only lines of source code.
The canceled Agent Trevor expansion reportedly included an Arab mansion and a space mission, alongside other cut content such as jetpacks and additional vehicles.
Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said Twitch has been advising Rockstar on how to engage creators around Grand Theft Auto 6, reflecting the streaming platform’s expected role in the game’s launch and multiplayer ecosystem.
The delay between Grand Theft Auto 6’s launch and its multiplayer mode would differ sharply from Grand Theft Auto 5, whose GTA Online component arrived about two weeks after the main game; analysts cited the need to prioritize the base game and the continued profitability of the existing GTA Online as possible reasons for the later rollout.
Rockstar faces a transition challenge because the existing GTA Online is unlikely to shut down when the new multiplayer mode launches, leaving some players with long-established characters and progress in the older game while others move to the new version.
A massive leak of more than 190GB of Rockstar Games files has exposed canceled content from Grand Theft Auto 5 and early assets from GTA 6, offering a rare glimpse into the studio's abandoned plans. Eurogamer reported that the leaked materials reveal a scrapped Liberty City expansion that would have nearly doubled GTA 5's map size, alongside the canceled Agent Trevor single-player DLC featuring missions like space travel and an Arab mansion. The files also contain early GTA 6 development work dating to 2015.
Separately, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy told Bloomberg that GTA 6's multiplayer component is expected to launch in 2027—roughly a year after the main game arrives. Clancy said Twitch has been advising Rockstar on how to engage streamers around the launch, noting "You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer." Rockstar has not officially confirmed this timeline.
The leaked debug build from a PlayStation 3 version of GTA 5 contains actual playable assets rather than just source code, allowing dataminers to examine detailed maps and mission files. VideoCardz reported that Rockstar once planned a massive Liberty City DLC that would have substantially enlarged the game world. The expansion was shelved as the studio shifted focus entirely to developing and monetizing GTA Online.
The Agent Trevor expansion was even more ambitious. IXBT Games noted the canceled DLC included a space mission, jetpacks, new vehicles, an Arab mansion, and an appearance by GTA 4's character Brucie Kibbutz. After GTA 5's 2013 release, Rockstar had planned substantial single-player content. Those efforts were abandoned as GTA Online became increasingly profitable.
GTA 6's staggered release differs sharply from GTA 5, whose online mode arrived just two weeks after launch. CBR analysts suggest Rockstar wants to prioritize polishing the base game before shifting resources to multiplayer. The delay also lets the studio milk the existing GTA Online for another year—the game still generates significant revenue after over a decade online.
This approach creates a unique transition challenge. Millions of GTA Online players have built characters with years of progress and virtual wealth. When the new multiplayer launches in 2027, Rockstar must keep the old servers running rather than forcing everyone to the new version. That means maintaining two separate online ecosystems simultaneously.
Separate from the Rockstar leak, developer EpicReds0817 released the reGTA Collection in mid-September, porting GTA III, Vice City, and Liberty City Stories to New Nintendo 3DS systems. Eteknix reported that Liberty City Stories represents a nearly complete reverse-engineered port using custom dual-screen interfaces. The projects require custom firmware and legally owned original game data—modders don't distribute copyrighted binaries.
The homebrew effort reflects the modding community's commitment to game preservation. These ports let players experience classic GTA titles on portable hardware decades after their original releases. Eurogamer noted that such projects highlight how fans keep older games playable when publishers don't officially release them on modern platforms.
Some fans and outlets have speculated that the canceled Liberty City assets could become downloadable content for GTA 6. VideoCardz noted that such claims remain purely speculative. Rockstar has made no official announcements about repurposing the old expansions. The studio's internal plans are also subject to change.
The leaked files originated from a 2023 security breach at Rockstar. Legal filings from September 2026 showed that Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar's Studio Director, called unapproved disclosures about GTA 6's online features and character data "extraordinarily alarming." The studio continues to deal with the fallout of one of gaming's largest data leaks.
