Innocent US Marine Mistakenly Sued and Threatened Due to Shared Name

Matthew Ingalls, an active-duty US Marine Corps sergeant who shares the same name as one of the "Cornell 7" gang rapists, has been targeted by an online mob who mistakenly served him with a lawsuit accusing seven Cornell University fraternity brothers of gang rape. The lawsuit led to his address being publicly posted online and his family receiving death threats. Ingalls had no connection to the case but was targeted when lawyers for the accuser mistakenly added the Ingalls’ home address to the official docket in the court case. His family has been terrorized, threatened and harassed, and while he has military protection at Camp Lejeune base in North Carolina, fears for their safety.
