UCLA Study Reveals California Forest Fires Intensify Dramatically, Blaming Climate Change and Fire Suppression
California's forest fires are not just getting bigger — they are getting deadlier for trees. A new study by scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that acres burned in California's forests increased roughly tenfold between 1985 and 2024, according to The State.
Even more alarming is the rise of high-severity fires. These are blazes that burn so hot they kill trees outright, leaving no chance for forests to recover. Tri-City Herald reports that high-severity fires increased by a staggering thirtyfold over the same period.
Not all wildfires are the same. Low-severity fires burn through undergrowth and leave many trees standing. High-severity fires are different. They burn at extreme temperatures and kill nearly everything in their path. Trees that might have survived a normal fire have no chance.
California's forests evolved with fire. For thousands of years, regular, low-intensity burns kept forests healthy. But when fires now burn this hot, trees cannot regenerate. The land is left barren. According to Charlotte Observer, this shift in fire behavior is what makes the new trend so dangerous.
The UCLA researchers point to two main causes. The first is climate change, which brings hotter temperatures and longer droughts. The second is decades of fire suppression. For most of the 20th century, officials put out every fire they could find. That stopped natural, low-intensity burns from clearing out dead wood and brush.
Over time, that unburned fuel piled up. Forests became dense and overgrown. When fires do start now, they have far more fuel to burn. San Luis Obispo Tribune notes that this buildup of dry vegetation is a key reason fires are now burning so much hotter and spreading so much faster.
The UCLA study calls for urgent action. Researchers say California and the federal government must dramatically expand two tools: controlled burns and forest thinning. Controlled burns are intentional, managed fires set under safe conditions. Thinning means removing extra trees and brush by hand or machine.
Both methods reduce the amount of fuel available for wildfires. The goal is to restore forests to something closer to their natural state — less crowded, less combustible. Star-Telegram reports that scientists say this work needs to happen at a much larger scale than what is currently being done.
The raw numbers tell a stark story. In the late 1980s, wildfires burned a relatively small share of California's forests each year. By the 2020s, that figure had multiplied tenfold. High-severity fire acreage multiplied by thirty. These are not gradual shifts. They are dramatic changes in a single generation.
Scientists warn that without major intervention, this trend will continue. Hotter, drier conditions driven by climate change will keep pushing fire behavior to new extremes.
