Conservatives vow to legislate for new nuclear power stations in Scotland

Conservative shadow energy secretary Andrew Bowie said the party would legislate to enable new nuclear power stations in Scotland, arguing that no part of the UK should be excluded from a planned third large-scale reactor and that nuclear power could support jobs and energy security. The proposal challenges the SNP’s opposition to new nuclear construction, which is backed by Scottish planning policy. Scotland’s energy minister Stephen Gethins defended the government’s focus on renewables, pointing to offshore wind’s potential to create jobs and noting that it avoids the legacy of nuclear waste.
Scotland’s only remaining nuclear power station is Torness in East Lothian, whose operating life has been extended to 2030.
The proposal for a third large-scale reactor differs from the UK Government’s plans for small nuclear reactors in Scotland; the article says a large reactor north of the border had not previously been seriously considered.
Bowie also criticized the UK Government for delaying decisions on the Rosebank and Jackdaw North Sea oil fields, alleging it was worried about voters moving from Labour to the Greens.
