Pope Leo XIV Sends Blessing to Chicago White Sox for Playoff Opener

Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and longtime White Sox fan, sent the team a letter of support before its American League Wild Card opener against the Houston Astros. Addressed to team chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, the letter thanked him for a note following the White Sox’s August tribute to the pope. Leo invoked his view of sports as a “school of life,” saying he hoped the team would foster friendship and solidarity, and offered blessings to Reinsdorf and his loved ones.
The letter was dated Sept. 9 and, according to the team, arrived at Rate Field on Tuesday; one report said it arrived about half an hour before first pitch.
The White Sox reached the playoffs with an 84-78 record after losing at least 101 games in each of the previous three seasons.
Asked whether he had helped cause the team’s turnaround, Leo smiled and replied, “No comment.”
The White Sox’s playoff berth coincided with one for the Chicago Cubs, marking the first time both Chicago teams qualified since 2020, according to CBS News.
