Block Integrates Bitcoin Lightning Support into x402 for Autonomous AI Agent Payments

Block has joined the x402 Foundation and added Bitcoin Lightning support to its open payment standard, which allows AI agents and web services to pay autonomously for APIs, data and other digital services. Block says Lightning’s low-cost, high-speed transactions could serve the frequent micropayments expected as AI-driven commerce grows. The foundation, launched under the Linux Foundation, also includes Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Coinbase and the Solana Foundation; Block’s move builds on its work on the Universal Commerce Protocol for AI-enabled commerce. The Lightning specification has been merged into x402’s repository, while a Python implementation is still awaiting review and testing on real nodes.
