The month matched the absolute temperature record since at least 1940, fueled by record ocean temperatures and unusually low polar sea ice. Scientists attribute the extreme heat to human-caused climate change layered on top of the supersized El Niño pattern. The combination is shifting weather patterns globally and is expected to keep temperatures elevated well into the fall.
