Aravind and Alcon Open Global Centre of Excellence for Retina Training in India

Aravind Eye Care System and Alcon have launched the Aravind Alcon Global Centre of Excellence for Vitreoretinal Surgery Training in Coimbatore, India, targeting one of the sharpest gaps in global eye care — the shortage of trained retina surgeons, according to Montreal Gazette. The new centre will train around 60 ophthalmologists per year, combining hands-on surgical practice with online education to reach doctors in underserved regions worldwide.
Vitreoretinal surgery treats serious conditions at the back of the eye, including retinal detachment and diabetic eye disease. Specialists in this field are scarce in many low- and middle-income countries, leaving millions of patients without care, Calgary Sun reported.
The centre features a dedicated wet laboratory built specifically for vitreoretinal training. A wet lab lets surgeons practice on biological tissue before operating on real patients. This hands-on setup is key to building surgical confidence and skill, according to Ottawa Sun.
The lab gives trainees direct experience with the tools and techniques used in complex retina procedures. Surgeons can repeat difficult steps safely, without risk to patients. This model is widely seen as the gold standard for surgical education, Sudbury Star reported.
The centre does not rely on in-person training alone. It pairs the wet lab experience with scalable virtual education, letting doctors in remote areas access retina training online. This hybrid model is designed to multiply the centre's reach far beyond Coimbatore, Recorder reported.
The goal is long-term capacity building — not just training 60 surgeons a year, but creating a pipeline of skilled retina specialists across regions that currently have very few. Virtual tools allow the curriculum to grow without requiring more physical space or local faculty, according to Paris Star Online.
Aravind Eye Care System is one of the world's largest eye care providers. It has treated tens of millions of patients in India and is known for delivering high-quality care at very low cost. Alcon is a global leader in eye care products and surgical equipment, Seaforth Huron Expositor reported.
The two organisations bring different strengths to the partnership. Aravind offers clinical depth and surgical volume. Alcon adds technology, equipment, and global industry reach. Together, they aim to make advanced retina training accessible in places that have historically lacked it, according to Cochrane Times Post.
Retinal diseases are a leading cause of blindness worldwide. Yet many countries have only a handful of trained vitreoretinal surgeons. In some regions, patients travel hundreds of miles — or go untreated entirely — because no local specialist exists, PR Record Gazette reported.
The Coimbatore centre is positioned to change that, at least incrementally. By training 60 surgeons annually and expanding through virtual channels, the programme could reach thousands of additional patients each year. The centre places India at the centre of a global effort to close the retina care gap, Pembroke Observer reported.
