MediSun Energy and Yanrun form joint venture at SIWW 2026 for global water treatment

MediSun Energy and Yanrun Membrane Technology have announced a strategic joint venture at Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) 2026, creating a new Singapore-based company to sell advanced water treatment technology worldwide. The deal, signed on June 18, targets the global Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) market — a sector valued at $8.8 billion in 2026 and growing at 8.3% annually, according to PR Newswire.
ZLD systems treat industrial wastewater so completely that nothing is discharged — not even brine. MediSun CEO Dusun Kim said the global industrial market has hit an "inflection point" where conventional wastewater disposal is no longer sustainable. The new entity will serve as the exclusive global launchpad for their combined solutions outside mainland China.
MediSun Energy, founded in Singapore in 2023, specializes in turning brine waste into usable resources — extracting minerals and generating what it calls "blue energy." Yanrun, founded in 2010 in China, holds 47 national patents for electro-driven membranes and was a key participant in China's 863 State High-Tech Development Plan. Together, they cover what neither could do alone.
Yanrun Chairman Huang Quansen called the deal a "pivotal milestone" to bring circular industrial water reuse technologies to the global stage, according to Yahoo Finance. MediSun brings the international market access. Yanrun brings the manufacturing muscle. The new Singapore entity bridges both.
The joint venture will develop and sell five core technologies. These include Electrodialysis Bipolar Membrane (EDBM) systems, Electrodialysis Metathesis (EDM) systems, standard Electrodialysis (ED) stacks, and Pressurised Forward Osmosis (PFO) systems. In plain terms, these technologies use electric current and specialized membranes to pull clean water and usable minerals out of industrial wastewater — leaving nothing behind to pollute.
MediSun's earlier UAE pilot, Project Elixir, shows what this looks like in practice. The system processes 500 cubic meters of desalination brine every day. It produces 300 kilograms of magnesium carbonate — a material used in steelmaking — as a byproduct, according to Benzinga. Experts at Global Water Intelligence note that PFO offers a major efficiency gain over traditional thermal evaporation, though high capital costs remain a concern for smaller industrial buyers.
The announcement came on the third day of SIWW 2026, held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre. Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong opened the event, highlighting a S$12 million RIE2030 fund dedicated to industrial water solutions. PUB, Singapore's national water agency, noted at the event that such partnerships reinforce Singapore's role as a global hub where water technology is not just created but exported worldwide.
Choosing Singapore as the base also carries strategic advantages. The city-state's trade agreements with the GCC and the EU let the new entity sidestep the trade complexities that a China-based structure might face. MediSun already has a foothold in the region — a $30 million joint venture called MediSun Arabia with MOAJ Holding in Saudi Arabia, launched in September 2024, according to ADVFN.
The venture's primary markets are the GCC region — Saudi Arabia and the UAE — and Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and Indonesia. These areas are seeing a surge in water-heavy industries. AI data centers alone consume between 5,000 and 30,000 cubic meters of water daily, according to a MediSun whitepaper cited by Benzinga. Wafer fabrication plants face similar water demands. ZLD systems let these facilities operate under tightening environmental rules without shutting down.
Analysts at Fairfield Market Research say ZLD adoption in water-stressed regions is moving from a "regulatory hurdle" to a "survival necessity." The Asia-Pacific and Middle East ZLD market is projected to reach $15.3 billion by 2033. MediSun, which raised $8.75 million in Seed funding in November 2024 at a $44 million valuation, appears to be positioning itself at the center of that growth.
