Murata Expands PIM API Service to All 73 Categories, Boosting Product Information Access

Murata Manufacturing (TOKYO: 6981) has expanded its Product Information Management (PIM) API Service to cover all 73 of its product categories, up from just three in its previous version. Financial Post reports the update lets engineers and procurement teams automatically pull the latest specs, component status, S-parameters, and SPICE Netlists — the simulation files used in circuit design — directly into their own systems.
The announcement came on June 24, 2026, with President Norio Nakajima formalizing it as a core piece of Murata's digital transformation push. Before this update, engineers had to manually retrieve product data for most of the company's lineup — a slow process that left teams exposed to outdated specs and surprise component discontinuations.
Murata first launched its Product Information API in August 2020 as a trial, covering only surface-mount and leaded ceramic capacitors. By January 2021, Version 2.2 added inductors, bringing the total to three categories. For the remaining 70 product lines, engineers had no choice but to update spreadsheets by hand — a process Murata itself described as a "burden" that introduced significant human error.
Version 3.0, rolled out quietly on March 25, 2026, was the first to target all 73 categories in Murata's product search database. A single API call can now return up to 2,000 product entries. Issued download links for full specification files expire after seven days, keeping data access controlled and current.
Murata was direct about why it made this move. The company cited "concerns that changes to product specifications or status might not be captured in real time," warning that lag could "impact development and component supply," according to Financial Post. In fast-moving sectors like AI hardware and electric vehicles, that lag is no longer acceptable.
Industry experts say the stakes are high. Roughly 15% of electronic parts now leave the market every year. Component lifecycles in some AI hardware sectors have compressed to under four years. The January 2024 Noto earthquake in Japan also exposed how quickly supply chains can fracture when real-time component data is unavailable, leaving manufacturers scrambling for alternatives.
Murata controls roughly 40% of the global market for multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) — the tiny components found in nearly every modern device. Analysts view the API expansion as more than a convenience upgrade. By becoming the easiest component supplier to integrate into automated procurement platforms, Murata makes itself the default choice and raises the switching cost for engineers who build workflows around its data.
The move puts pressure on rivals like TDK and Samsung Electro-Mechanics to match Murata's API depth or risk being excluded from automated design and sourcing pipelines. Murata has set a ¥2,000 billion revenue target for 2027, backed by ¥680 billion in planned capital spending to expand production of the very components now covered by the API, according to Financial Post.
For design engineers, the practical benefit is straightforward. Teams can now sync their internal systems — including ERP platforms used for purchasing — directly with Murata's live product database. That eliminates the multi-day lag of manual updates and reduces the risk of building a product around a component that has already been discontinued, according to Calgary Sun.
But the "connect-anything" approach carries risks. Industry reports on API security warn that opening access to proprietary SPICE Netlists and detailed component specifications creates new vulnerabilities for manufacturers. The broader push for digital integration in the component supply chain is accelerating — but so is the complexity of keeping that data secure.
